Promoting Diversity in Elementary Classrooms
Cultural Diversity can be promoted in every school level. In the Elementary classrooms, there are several ways to incorporate cultural diversity (among other diversities) into the curriculum and into the classroom:
|
- Engage the class in activities that encourage racial and cultural awareness. Students need to have knowledge about their own race and culture as well as the culture of others. Ask parents of preschool students to lend you a music CD that their family listens to on a daily basis; allow the children to listen and dance to several music CD's from different cultures. The variety of music teaches the students that everyone enjoys singing and dancing, just in different ways.
- Allow them to discuss information about themselves, such as "My family is Jewish and we celebrate Hanukkah because...." Instruct the students on how to properly speak to other students in a respectful way, as well as how to treat them fairly.
