Diversity in the Classroom
Diversity in the classroom can be simply recognizing students' uniqueness in their own way. It is important to embrace the students' differences and promote a positive learning environment.
Each student in the classroom has a unique set of abilities and it is important to recognize these abilities in order to help the students learn from one another.
According to the 2006 Stats Canada Census, almost 20% of Canada's population was born in other countries, the second-highest stat in the world. Over 90% of new citizens settle in larger urban areas, mostly in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.1
A multicultural education addresses the needs of all learners and helps students appreciate other cultures. This can be incorporated through content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, an equity pedagogy, and empowering school culture.1

What Can You Do As A Teacher?
Teachers should provide an encouraging and productive learning environment where students feel comfortable, safe, and respected. It is also important to encourage valuing differences and diversity in the classroom. Here are some things you can do to create a valuable learning environment:
